The Sun Inn

Lothian Bridge, DALKEITH, EH22 4TR

1 rosettes

This is a real gem of a pub. In fact, it's more than a pub, but still a pub. And that's a good thing. A winner of the AA Pub of the Year for Scotland a few years ago, the old inn was revitalised in 2009 and these days it has fabulous boutique bedrooms, a good deal of smart-yet-rustic charm, and a menu that champions local producers. There are beams aplenty, real fires and an all-round bonhomie to the place. The menu is supported by blackboards and follows the seasons to deliver some inventive but not over-blown contemporary dishes: a pork tapas plate, for example, which includes Scotch egg, belly pork, barbecued slider and winter slaw. Pheasant and ham pie with sherried bay leaf cream is a fine pie indeed, and the beef Wellington with Hornig's haggis is a surefire hit. There's beer from the independent Stewart's of Edinburgh and a well-chosen wine list to complete the picture.
