Olga Polizzi reinvented this former yachtie hangout with a dose of cool seaside boutique chic back in 1997, and it's still looking good, with the whiff of the briny in the air, jaunty nautical style, Mediterranean-inspired luminosity, and sweeping views out to sea and towards Falmouth from its sun-trap terrace. The restaurant itself is a soul-soothing environment, light and airy with mosaic flooring, oatmeal tongue and groove walls, and shell-like wall lighting; white-clothed tables are simply set, and stylish tableware adds a reassuring touch of class. Paul Wadham’s cooking matches the environment with a pleasing congruity, the simple elegance of the restaurant reflected within the dishes, each reliant on high quality produce for its effect, and many arriving with a warm waft of the Mediterranean – witness a simple starter of exemplary salt cod croquettes, matched with vibrant sauce vierge, and made with the confidence to leave well alone. The Mediterranean mood continues with a main course starring red mullet with a supporting cast of clams, asparagus and prosciutto, the ingredients all sparkling, its flavours in pleasing balance, or perhaps beef fillet with gnocchi, confit tomato, oyster mushroom and shallots. End on a high note with moist Tunisian orange cake pointed up with gently tart yogurt sorbet.
