Great ales and food at this family-run village pub

At a glance

AA Pick of the Pubs
Bar menu

In the picturesque village of Wrinehill, The Crown is just six miles south of Crewe and the same distance from Newcastle-under-Lyme so it’s well located for visitors crossing the borders of Staffordshire and Cheshire. The Davenhill family bought this 19th-century former coaching inn back in 1977 and it is now run by Anna and Mark Condliffe, the daughter and son-in-law of long-serving licensee Charles Davenhill. With an open-plan layout the pub retains its oak beams and famously large inglenook fireplace, always a welcome feature. The bar does a good line in well-kept real ales, with always a choice of seven, two each from Jennings and Marston’s, one from Salopian Ales and every week two microbrewery guests including their own ‘Legend’ ale; 15 wines are offered by the glass. Food is a major reason for the success of The Crown, not just for its consistent quality but for the generosity of the portions. Regularly changing menus are jam-packed with choice: from modestly priced light meals, such as home-made veggie chilli and rice to head chef Steve’s ‘legendary’ beef and ale pie with a hint of Stilton. For pudding, try home-made raspberry Bakewell with cream; or Bramley apple pie with hot custard.
