Having undergone a refurb in early 2017, the interior of this friendly 300-year-old free house is an appealing blend of contemporary and classic decor, with oak beams, leather upholstery and woodburners. Andrew and Sarah Banks have built a loyal following here thanks to their special passion for wine: over 200 bins appear on the list, 20 labels are served by the glass, and an annual wine festival is a high point in the pub’s busy calendar. After tasting, all wines can be bought at take-home prices, avoiding the guesswork of supermarket purchases. The monthly-changing and reasonably priced menu is served throughout, and could feature devilled whitebait, or pork belly and black pudding bites; fish pie with cheesy mash or an 8oz sirloin with hand-cut chips; and caramelised orange cheesecake or treacle sponge and custard.
