Set on the National Trust-owned Newtown River estuary, this charming whitewashed pub is an absolute mecca for sailing folk. One of the island’s best-known dining pubs, The New Inn’s name refers to how it rose phoenix-like from the charred remains of an older hostelry, which burnt down in 1743. Original inglenook fireplaces, flagstone floors and low-beamed ceilings give the place bags of character. The waterside location sets the tone for the menu; the inn has a reputation for excellent seafood dishes, with lobster and cracked local crab usually available. Daily specials are chalked on blackboards around the place. Further seafood options may include a pint of shell-on prawns with citrus-dressed baby leaf salad and locally baked bread; local ale battered fish of the day with chips, peas and home-made chunky tartare sauce; or fisherman’s pie made with fresh and smoked fish and lemon and tarragon sauce topped with mashed potato and melted IOW Gallybagger cheese. Meat lovers could try the home-made pie of the day or hand-carved honey and clove-glazed local ham, two fried Brownrigg eggs and chips. Vegetarians can enjoy the likes of grilled courgette stuffed with couscous, feta cheese and pine nuts, and butternut squash purée. There’s also a list of dishes for ‘smaller appetites’, including chicken goujons; or locally reared 5oz sirloin steak with chips and peas – but if it’s a light lunch you’re seeking, be sure to consider the best-selling hand-picked crabmeat sandwiches and baguettes or the ploughman’s featuring local cheeses and home-made chutneys.
