Learning to drive with a female instructor

Once you’ve received your provisional licence, it’s time to take the next step. Unless you’re getting lessons exclusively from a friend or family member, you’ll be looking for a driving instructor.

It’s important to choose a driving instructor with whom you feel relaxed. You’re going to be spending time with them in a confined space, after all.

Some learners would rather choose a female driving instructor to teach them. Let’s look at the considerations for doing so.

Is there a difference between male and female driving instructors?

In terms of ability and know-how, there isn't. Every driving instructor, regardless of gender, will have been subject to the same rigorous driving instructor training

If you choose an AA instructor, you can be sure they'll be professional, patient and supportive. Our instructors will take you through our learning to drive curriculum at your own pace, developing your driving skills and confidence. Ultimately our goal is to make you competent and safe behind the wheel, allowing you to pass your test with flying colours and enjoy a lifetime of safe, happy driving.

We pride ourselves on offering a superior learning to drive experience – your AA instructor will nurture your skills and build your confidence in no time. Plus, if it helps, all of our driving instructors are good with people. It’s part of the job.

What reasons might there be for choosing a female instructor?

Some may choose a female driving instructor out of preference, or there may be other considerations. Here are some of the reasons:

  • Feeling comfortable – as you’re going to be spending a lot of time with your driving instructor, it’s important to feel comfortable in their company. You can be confident that when you learn with us you'll be working with some of the most professional and talented instructors in the industry. They're experts at putting you at ease, getting you to relax and focus – helping you to build your knowledge and skills in every lesson.
  • Bad experience – we hope this isn’t the case for you, but some learners may have had a poor learning experience with a male driver. Although one bad experience shouldn’t put you off, it often does. With us you can be sure of the highest of teaching standards and professionalism. As extra reassurance, you can also switch instructors free of charge. So, if you’re moving home or just want to change for any reason, you can move to another one of our instructors to complete your training without any switching fee.
  • Religious/cultural reasons – there may be religious or cultural considerations which mean you must choose a woman instructor. For example, some women can’t spend time alone with a man who isn’t a relative. In these cases, opting for a female instructor would be your only choice.
Are female driving instructors hard to find?

They certainly can be. Most driving instructors are male, so you might find women driving instructors in short supply. There are approximately 40,000 ADIs working in the UK, and no more than a quarter are female.

Don’t be put off though. If you’d feel more comfortable learning with a female instructor, we’ll do our best to see that you get one.

Should I choose a male or female driving instructor?

That's up to you. For some it may not matter, while others might feel more comfortable with a female driving instructor. We feel that a good learning to drive experience is ultimately down to the patience, quality and professionalism of the instructor – which you can be assured of getting with us.

If you’d like to go ahead, you can book driving lessons with the AA. We’re sure we’ve got the perfect instructor for you.
