Free breakdown service for all NHS workers during the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis

How it works

To say thank you to all NHS workers for your tireless work and commitment, we’re providing free breakdown service to and from work during the coronavirus crisis. Whether you're an AA member or not.

  • If you work for the NHS and you break down travelling between home and work, call us 24/7 on your dedicated NHS number 0800 072 5064.
  • We'll send out a patrol to try and fix your vehicle on the spot. If they can't, we'll take you to where you need to be.
  • To make sure you can contact us quickly if you need to, fill in the form below and we’ll send you a text with the dedicated phone number so you have everything to hand.

    You don't need AA membership and you won't be charged for calling us out to help. Just give us a call and show your NHS ID to the patrol when they arrive.

Terms and conditions
  1. If you have an existing AA membership please report the breakdown via the AA App or in the usual way. Breakdown assistance under AA Membership breakdown cover is not restricted to journeys to and from work, and you may hold additional benefits.
  2. This offer is available to NHS workers based within the UK only.
  3. This is a time limited offer which makes free breakdown assistance available (at home or at the roadside), to NHS workers who break down on the way to or from work.
  4. You will be asked to show your NHS ID to the patrol to prove you’re an NHS worker and eligible for this service.
  5. Any parts supplied to repair your vehicle must be paid for. e.g. a new battery.
  6. If you put the wrong fuel in your car this isn't covered as part of the offer. Fuel Assist can help and can be contacted 24/7 on 0808 271 6693.
  7. This discretionary service is not AA Membership: service users do not become AA Members, do not hold any AA Membership breakdown cover entitlements including, without restriction, any onward travel benefits or parts/garage labour cover and do not have access to AA member benefits.
  8. We reserve the right to change or withdraw the service at any time.
FAQs
What do I do if my vehicle breaks down?

First of all, make sure you’re in a safe place. Move your vehicle off the road if possible, or pull up onto the hard shoulder if you’re on the motorway.

Stay well away from moving traffic – it’s usually safest to get out of your car (using the doors facing away from passing traffic) and wait behind a barrier.

Put your hazard warning lights on and wear a reflective jacket, if you have one.

Once you’re safe, give us a call on the dedicated NHS number 0800 072 5064. We’ll come and rescue you, even if you’re not a Member.

If you’re already with us, you can also report a breakdown and pinpoint your location using our app. It's the fastest way to ask us for help and track our arrival.

Are there any restrictions on the vehicles you can assist with?

We’ll assist with anything, as long as it's less than 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) and no wider than 8ft 3in (2.55m). This is to make sure our vehicles and equipment can recover your vehicle, if necessary.

It doesn’t matter how old it is or what mileage is on the clock.


What if I already have AA breakdown cover?

If you have an existing AA membership you may have a more enhanced level of cover, all year round. You may also have cover for other vehicles and for other people, such as family members. You'll also have the use of Member Benefits, which you wouldn't get as part of this free service. If you do have an enhanced level of cover you can continue to report a breakdown via the AA app or online.


Can I get free assistance in the Republic of Ireland?

No, as we can only cover the UK.
