Ensconced in 70 acres of landscaped gardens and parkland, the impressive Victorian manor presents a striking sight when reflected in the waters of its ornamental lake. The sweeping pastoral views are best appreciated from either a seat in the Colonial lounge-bar or a table in the suitably elegant setting of the Chaddesley dining room, or if you are going about things in the right spirit, one after the other. Expect bright, beautifully-presented food with a clever contemporary edge courtesy of Tim Jenkins, whose cooking steps up to the mark with a precise and skilful interpretation of modern thinking in dishes that balance a certain robustness with unusual and unexpected flavours, as witnessed in an opening partnership of pan-fried scallops and belly pork served with passionfruit cream. A punchy main course partnering pan-fried venison loin with a croquette of shoulder meat and Oxford Blue cheese, baked Jerusalem artichoke skins, sprouts and hazelnut jus shows a sound grasp of what works with what, or another idea might see pan-roasted monkfish matched with spiced cauliflower, various forms of brassicas, mussel velouté and almonds. Technically impressive interplays of flavour and texture shine once again at dessert, when iced coconut parfait is delivered with lime sorbet and pineapple.
