A name to conjure with since first opening as a restaurant in the 1960s, this traditional stone building, one of the oldest in Ilkley, is recognisable by its jolly hanging baskets and flower-filled front garden (it won ‘Ilkley in Bloom’ in 2017). Inside it’s equally traditional – no pale contemporary tones here – it’s all antiques, curly light fittings and ornately-framed paintings, giving a richly luxurious feel. Simon Gueller’s classically-inspired food, though, is bang on and firmly up to date, with refined dishes showing an elegant grasp of modern French style. Dinner might begin with a delicious amuse bouche of spiced parsnip velouté with salted apple, followed by a starter of east coast mackerel, Whitby crab, and heritage beetroot, or butter-roasted cauliflower, hazelnut, winter truffle, cauliflower and coconut purée. Main course fillet of turbot comes with leek fondue, silky parmesan pommes mousseline, crosnes and jus noisette. Dishes are beautifully presented and flavours clear and uncluttered. At dessert, look out for the seasonal soufflés – prune and Armagnac is a warming winter version, accompanied with crème anglaise.
