Richard Turner's place in the Birmingham suburb of Harborne makes quite a statement inside, with mirror-lined walls that emphasise the name reflecting crystal chandeliers and elegantly linened tables, a cheering antidote to the rather humdrum exterior surroundings. Welcoming staff and a buzzy atmosphere help things along too. Turner's preference is for prettily presented plates of sharply etched, classically based Anglo-French food, often garlanded with edible flowers in purples and yellows for that all-important visual appeal. Duck liver parfait with brioche, followed perhaps by lemon sole in herb butter, could whisk us back to the bistro days of the 1960s, except that the interpretations are more up-to-the-minute, that starter dish also adorned with chicken skin and burnt orange. More adventurously, there could be wild sea bass with parsnip purée and barbecued leeks in red wine sauce, or Anjou pigeon Wellington in Madeira jus scented with spruce. Sides include the always irresistible duck fat chips, and heritage finishers such as rice pudding dobbed with blackberry compôte and scattered with rice crispies will seal the deal. If you don't mind planning ahead, two of you can order a tarte Tatin that's made to order. Note that Turners no longer offers a tasting menu.
