Nuthurst's long tree-lined avenue approach leads to a brick-built Victorian mansion in private woodland, so allow plenty of time for exploring. A judicious balance of culinary modernism and traditional ideas is evident on the menus, describing an arc from lobster and crab cocktail with tomatoes and brown bread to creamed sea trout and mascarpone terrine with Parma ham crisps and gingerbread among the starters. Dishes have a lot in them but manage not to look crowded, and might include duck breast with a pasty, roast parsnips, potato croquettes and roughly puréed trompette mushrooms in Madeira jus. Artfully arranged desserts include pineapple soufflé with Valrhona salted caramel chocolate mousse and nutty florentines.
