Money was clearly no object for William Bryant, son of one of the founders of the match company, when he built this magnificent pile in 1885. It's set in landscaped grounds and gardens, and the squishy sofas of the Great Hall are great for people watching. Start with duck liver ballotine, its richness cut by sweet wine jelly, or leek and potato velouté with luxurious black truffle shavings. Main courses might be fillet and braised shoulder of lamb with goats' curd, roasted aubergine and caramelised cippolini onions, say, or pan-fried monkfish with spicy Puy lentils and tomato ragout. End with a textbook cherry clafoutis with clotted cream ice cream.
