Dating back to the 17th century, when it was built for the Dukes of Perth, this stately old house with its pale pink walls is wonderfully located in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. A hotel since the 1930s, it has 20 acres of gardens and a truly beautiful interior, with fine period details, from the secret chapel to the panelled library, and an antique grand piano and more than 40 malt whiskies in the bar. The two dining rooms are as sumptuous and splendid as you could wish for, with attentive, well-trained staff, and the food is focused and contemporary. The short carte and set-price menus are attentive to the seasons, so roast turbot might appear with carrot purée, coppa ham, and shellfish jus, followed by a curried sweet potato soup with cumin yogurt, before moving on to roast grouse with pear and celeriac remoulade, hibiscus gel and sauce poivrade. Three-chocolate mousse with passionfruit sorbet is the ideal conclusion, before withdrawing to the lounge for your coffee and petits fours.
