A lengthy tree-lined drive is always a good start, and when a Victorian castle façade in the Scots baronial manner looms before you at the end of it, you know you're in good hands. Glenapp looks the regal part throughout, with swagged curtains and deep floral upholstery as standard, and a reigning sense of calm civility. The place maintains reassuring professionalism, as well as a reputation for dependable French-influenced cooking under the aegis of executive chef David Alexander. Much of the produce is grown within the grounds, and arrives in the context of a six-course menu, including a pre-dessert, that might kick off with a bowl of satiny pea and mint velouté, before proceeding to a classic terrine of smoked ham hock and foie gras with brioche and apricot chutney. Seared scallops in sauce vierge provides the sea interlude, and then main course delivers a fish or meat choice, either sea bass on ratatouille couscous in red pepper sauce, or full-flavoured breast of chicken with a black pudding bonbon and mash in tarragon-laced Madeira jus. If the Scottish cheeses don't lure you away from dessert, expect something like Calvados parfait with green apple sorbet.
