Set in four acres of beautiful grounds and gardens, a cosseting air of luxury pervades the Mount Somerset, a fine Regency hotel with splendid views across the Quantock and Blackdown Hills. Inside you'll find all the original features you could wish for, from impressive fireplaces and a statement staircase to chandeliers and magnificent plasterwork. In the kitchen, head chef Mark Potts has been making his presence felt, ensuring his menus bring a stylish and contemporary air to the high-ceilinged dining room. Dishes are nicely judged, often featuring herbs, fruit and vegetables from the hotel's own garden. A starter of perfectly cooked veal sweetbreads, enhanced with thinly sliced cauliflower, hints of truffle and Mimolette cheese is a delicate dish, while a tasting of suckling pig makes a more robust main course, taking in pork belly, a lean, moist chop, and tender pork loin, all enhanced by choi sum and a sweet cider jus, and all bursting with flavour. 'Apples and Pears' is a soft, light apple and prune sponge, with poached pear and toast ice cream.
