This charming Georgian dower house is the perfect setting for a family-run restaurant with rooms. Public areas are relaxed and comfortable, and the Ford family (Tim and son Olly in the kitchen, wife Emma out front) have worked hard to create a delightfully civilized setting for their classically-based, thoughtfully considered and precisely constructed dishes. The airy, gracious dining room overlooks the garden, and menus concentrate on wonderfully fresh produce, including fish from Cornwall. Menus are straightforward, and the main ingredient in each dish is given plenty of room to shine. A paupiette of Cornish lemon sole stuffed with Cornish lobster is a starter that signals the kitchen’s intentions nicely, a delicate dish, full of flavour and elegant simplicity. A turbot main is another beautiful piece of fish, perfectly cooked and served with basil new potatoes, mini vegetables and champagne sauce. An Amaretto pannacotta is a fine example, thick and creamy and served with roasted pear and fig, and a slightly sharper pear sorbet for contrast. The wine list is exceptionally good.
