The two stand-out elements to Goldstone Hall are its magnificent gardens and ambitious restaurant. The kitchen garden is a major part of the operation, providing fresh, seasonal produce for the table, and the kitchen turns out bright, modern dishes while avoiding jumping on the bandwagon of every contemporary fashion. Excellent amuse-bouche gets things off to a flying start, as do the home-made breads. Then try crab and ginger salad, say, with confit fennel and lemon, followed by slow-cooked beef with bubble-and-squeak, Shropshire Blue bonbon and confit cabbage. Finish with a simple and well-executed lemon tart with raspberry sorbet.
