This Tudor hotel with strangely unmatched wings (built only 35 years apart) is stocked with fascinating antiques, both martial and domestic. Confident contemporary food is served up in a beamed room with mullioned windows and a pleasing coral-pink colour scheme. Start with gently spiced ham hock terrine dressed with raisin relish and baby gem and apple salad, or home-cured salmon with beetroot. Mains include crisply seared sea bass with scallops and vegetable 'spaghetti' in a rich beurre blanc containing sorrel, or medallion of local beef with oxtail ravioli, fondant potatoes and spinach. Finish with Amaretto soufflé laced with honey, accompanied by matching ice cream, or else a fine local cheese.
