Llangoed Hall is enviably situated in its own 17 acres of the Wye Valley, including pristine lawns, manicured gardens, a kitchen garden and maze, while glorious views over rolling countryside and the Black Mountains add to the sense of tranquillity. The original Jacobean mansion was rebuilt in the early 20th century by Clough Williams-Ellis (of Portmeirion fame), so it’s all about old-fashioned elegance inside, with luxurious lounges full of original features, fine furniture, and original artworks by Whistler and Augustus John creating a sophisticated old-school atmosphere. The restaurant is done out in delicate Wedgwood blue and white, and head chef Nick Brodie and his team in the kitchen make good use of the hotel's organic kitchen garden in 4-course à la carte or multi-course tasting menus (including an inventive veggie version) of polished modern British cooking. Minimally worded menus move from steak tartare with capers, shallots, brioche and mushrooms through foie gras with smoked eel and apple sauce, to a main event of venison with red cabbage and crisp lichen. The presentation of each plate is a visual treat, and there's no lack of invention among desserts either; a pumpkin-themed workout involving mousse, burnt cream and purée is lifted with lemon verbena and nitro yoghurt.<
