Once an overnight stop for travellers using the London to Sunderland mail coach, this has been an iconic restaurant for the past four decades. Now modernised for contemporary diners, the candlelit dining room oozes atmosphere with its stone fireplace and rustic carvings. The culinary style might be described as modern British-meets-French-bistro, opening effectively with ham hock ravioli, pea soup, crisp pancetta, followed by loin of rose veal, braised baby gem lettuce, sweet bread tortellini, sage and pine nut butter sauce. At dessert stage, apple jelly and custard is accompanied by blueberry ice cream and a cinnamon doughnut.
