A former coaching inn just a short hop from the coast, The Neptune still has the look of an old inn, with its creeper-covered Georgian façade, but it’s a top-notch restaurant with rooms these days. Travellers are still met warmly by the hands-on Jacki, whose husband is the prodigiously talented Kevin Mangeolles. Much of the glorious regional bounty around these parts finds its way into Kevin’s kitchen and onto a fixed-price carte and full-works tasting menu. The dining room is a smart, intimate space, with a neutral colour scheme and tables dressed in white linen. The cooking has its roots in sound classical thinking, with modern presentations, loads of good ideas and those local ingredients to the fore. Brancaster lobster, for example, in a mousse with star anise, or Norfolk quail with charred onion and pickled sultanas. Main course loin and shoulder of lamb is a fabulous summer offering, while a fishy number might be fillets of red mullet with broad beans and wild garlic. Peach is the centre of attention in a dessert with pistachio savarin and zesty lemon curd. The smart wine list has good options by the glass and half bottle.
