Tucked neatly away on a first floor at the bottom of Regent Street, Veeraswamy is London's oldest Indian restaurant, and has a refined Mayfair feel, with floral carpet, beamed ceiling and an ornate chandelier. Dishes of the Anglo-Indian culinary complex survive from the original 1926 menus, beginning with lemony, lentil-based mulligatawny, but elsewhere there is a more exploratory tendency that brings the less familiar subcontinental cooking to the fore. Tandoor-roasted skewered quail and peppers might be the prelude to Goan roast duck vindaloo made with Creedy Carver, or Hyderabadi chicken dopiaza with roast plums, while sides include a compendious dish of asparagus, sprouting broccoli, pumpkin and aubergine in mustard sauce.
