This lavishly elegant first-floor venue has served London stylishly since 1926, and the cooking pays homage to the regional classics of the sub-continent and keeps step with trendy new-wave ideas influenced by street snacks. Vivid spicing is a hallmark of time-honoured chicken tikka, or try a contemporary idea such as crab cakes vibrant with ginger, lime and chilli. Kashmiri rogan josh is a tried-and-true classic, the soft shank meat enhanced with crimson cockscomb flowers and saffron, or go for a luxuriant Malabar lobster curry with coconut and green mango. To finish, coconut and lemongrass put an exotic spin on pannacotta, or there's an exemplary gulab jamun.
