On the ground floor of a luxury Knightsbridge hotel, The Rib Room has an air of affluence. It's a large restaurant, with flowers on clothed tables, button-back leather-look chairs, a square-patterned carpet and slatted blinds at the windows. There's even a cigar bar and terrace, which says something about the clientele it attracts. The reputation of the place rests on the beef and steaks, as it has done since it opened in 1961. It's a well-earned reputation too, with top-quality meat cooked comme il faut, ranging from onglet through sirloin to Wagyu fillet (at a price) with a choice of sauces, among them béarnaise and bone marrow. But there's much more to the menu than beef, and the kitchen moves with the times. As well as prawn cocktail with Marie Rose sauce, starters might run to lobster and roast tomato bisque floated with crab ravioli, or smoked chicken salad with walnuts and persillade. Dover sole meunière, lobster thermidor and rib of beef with the usual accompaniments are fixtures, or go for the more adventurous pork tenderloin with potato-wrapped black pudding, swede and purple mustard sauce, or seared plaice fillet with poached crayfish tails, broccoli and a seaweed and caper broth. End with traditional treacle tart with tangy lemon, thyme and vanilla ice cream.
