The Victorian era of the train was in full swing when the grand Midland Hotel opened back in 1873, but our illustrious forbears didn’t have Eurostar trains that run non-stop to the Continent. Now spectacularly restored as the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, it is once more a London landmark at the heart of the rejuvenated Kings Cross quarter. A masterpiece of Gothic Revival, from its magnificent portico entrance to a sweeping double staircase, the place displays the kind of opulence that makes the perfect setting for a statement restaurant. Enter Marcus Wareing, whose breathtakingly ornate and glamorous cocktail bar and palatial dining room have put St Pancras onto the map for 21st-century foodies. His signature British-focused menus take prime UK produce and a soupçon of French style to deliver a well-crafted, gently contemporary repertoire that might open with crispy Dorset snails with braised shallot, parsley and garlic, followed by venison haunch with roasted parsley root, black pudding and bitter leaves. To finish, cleverly conceived desserts include the likes of liquorice pannacotta with fig, and lemon thyme ice cream.
