Magical culinary mystery tour in an old town hall

The grand old Shoreditch Town Hall retired from its local government career in the 1960s, and in step with the neighbourhood’s 21st-century reboot as hipster central, the building now houses arts venues and this hyper-cool restaurant. The Clove Club is right at home in this setting with its casual vibe, chunky wooden floors and tables, and open-to-view kitchen pass which positively buzzes with activity. The place raised a few eyebrows when it introduced a pre-paid reservation system (lunch does not require such a commitment), but the cool crew still flock in for the carte, and five- or nine-courses tasting menus (with meat-free versions). What arrives is cutting-edge stuff, with unusual ingredients, off-the-wall combinations and eye-catching presentations that seem custom-designed for posting on social media sites. British ingredients loom large, starting with the devilled Lincolnshire chicken that arrives in little pancakes with crispy skin and mustard leaf, while raw scallop with hazelnuts, clementine and Wiltshire truffle is a compelling mix of flavours. A sublime meat course delivers oh-so-tender roast fallow deer with a dazzling combo of fermented red cabbage purée, beetroot and blackcurrant, while Amalfi lemonade and Kampot pepper ice cream is a thrilling finisher. If you’re a lone diner or two-up, eating at the bar counter is on the cards
