Shoreditch Town Hall was considered quite the showpiece when it opened back in the 1860s. As Shoreditch developed into a trendy hotspot in the 21st century, this grand dame of a building morphed into an arts and events venue, or, as they themselves put it, a 'non-traditional creative space'. The Clove Club is right at home in this setting with its casual vibe, chunky wooden floors and tables, and open-to-view kitchen pass which positively buzzes with activity. Note that making a reservation for dinner involves payment in advance via a pre-paid ticket system (lunch does not require such a commitment). At dinner, choose either the five-course or the 'extended dinner menu' - nine courses FYI - and expect an array of creative snacks to precede the officially declared courses. What arrives is blisteringly creative and contemporary, with unusual ingredients, imaginative combinations and inventive presentations. Slow-poached oyster with beef jelly and grilled cream is a compelling mix of flavours, flamed red mullet sashimi keeps good company with blood orange, wild fennel and garum (a fermented fish sauce that dates back to Roman times), and a thrilling meat course might be a little pancake of devilled Lincolnshire chicken. Among sweet courses, burnt clementine and buttermilk mousse is a hit. There's an inspired bar menu, too.
