A cool, minimal Scandinavian feel with birch twig motifs and bare tables set against elegant Georgian plasterwork ceilings all add up to an elegant backdrop that entirely suits Agnar Sverrisson’s pin-sharp Scandi-accented modern European cooking. Creativity and talent at balancing flavours and, yes, textures are Sverrisson's trademark, together with his lightness of touch, avoiding cream or butter among the savoury courses, and using minimal sugar in the sweet stuff. Whether you go for the à la carte or tasting menus (there are versions available lunch and dinner, as well as fish-only and vegetarian options), or the unmissable value of the set lunch menu, expect sharply executed cooking and flashes of brilliance. Nordic influences are cleverly balanced with more southerly climes in a main course of lightly-salted Icelandic cod plated with brandade, avocado purée, confit tomatoes with basil, and the salty boost of chorizo. High-flying technical skill ensures flavours ring true in ideas such as saddle and haunch of Scottish roe deer with pied de mouton mushrooms, celeriac and redcurrants. For dessert, white chocolate mousse and ice cream are inventively counterpointed by dill and cucumber. The superlative food is backed by a splendid wine list that clearly has a love affair with Burgundies and Rieslings, with expert advice on hand.
