Jason Atherton's restaurant portfolio expanded to seven London operations at the start of 2016 with the opening of this Japanese izakaya-style restaurant and bar (the name means 'social', in keeping with his other venues). The place has a glossy, suitably minimalist aesthetic inspired by traditional Japanese homes, and includes a downstairs cocktail bar and a 10-seat chef's table that goes by the name of Kisetsu. After years spent in stellar Japanese establishments, Alex Craciun is thoroughly immersed in Japanese culinary ways, and heads up the team of knife-wielding chefs who deliver exemplary sushi, sashimi and refined, highly-detailed dishes that offer plenty to entertain the eye and palate. Raw sea bream is rolled and filled with crispy potato shreds and pointed up with orange zest and wild garlic flowers, or you might set out with benchmark squid tempura with shredded papaya and spring onion. Main courses are defined by their look-at-me artistry, but every detail makes sense: pork belly comes in a bowl with udon noodles and king oyster mushrooms, all immersed in a punchy pork broth; sukiyaki hotpot of Wagyu beef layers flavours of glass noodles, leeks and shiitaki mushrooms. If you're prepared to pass on the impressive wine list, there are 50-plus sakes to explore.
