The 'social' tag (pronounced here in the Japanese fashion, in case the penny hadn’t dropped) neatly links Jason Atherton's unique take on the Japanese izakaya-style restaurant and bar theme with most of his ever-expanding global restaurant portfolio. The traditional Japanese design influence is clear in the glossy, suitably minimalist aesthetic of the whole operation, and includes a cool basement cocktail bar that aims to capture the spirit of Tokyo by night. After a thorough grounding in stellar Japanese establishments, Alex Craciun is adept in Japanese culinary ways, and heads up the team of knife-wielding chefs who deliver exemplary sushi, sashimi and refined, highly-detailed dishes that offer plenty to keep Instagrammers busy. You might set out with blood orange-cured salmon with pungent tosazu jelly and buckwheat, or raw sea bream, rolled and filled with crispy potato shreds and pointed up with orange zest and wild garlic flowers. Next up, every detail makes sense in a sukiyaki hotpot of Wagyu beef that layers flavours of glass noodles, leeks and shiitaki mushrooms. To finish, green tea syrup is poured over shaved ice and matched with green tea ice cream and sweet red adzuki bean purée. Try going off-piste from the impeccable wine list, and get acquainted with the 50-plus sakes.
