The Mayfair outpost of London's Roka quartet is to be found in one of the calmer corners of the West End, its dark awning extending over a few outdoor tables for the intrepid. It's inside, though, that the real action is happening, where under a slatted wood ceiling amid steel columns, a robatayaki counter allows point-blank views of the charcoal-grilling and the lightning-fast ministrations of a talented brigade. A productive hybrid of classical Japanese and the modern fusion approach is the name of the game, and for those with the resources, the opulent tasting menu extends across a broad range, from the initial taste of yellowtail sashimi in truffled yuzu dressing to exquisite dumplings of black cod, crab and crayfish, and wasabi-fired scallops on skewers. Meats get the most regal treatment of all, for smoked duck breast with plum and moromi miso, or Grade 9 Wagyu beef and eringyi mushrooms in ponzu, which somewhat unsurprisingly comes at a substantial supplement. Dessert platters look good enough to eat rather than just photograph, the signature being the cuboid block of chocolate and green tea sponge pudding, garnished with pear ice cream topped with a crisp of Jivara chocolate. You won't want to miss the sake selection either.
