Just up the road from the BBC, Portland scores high with unstuffy, spot-on service and an intimate, if rather spartan interior of wooden tables and chairs, plain white walls, retro lighting, and an upbeat ambience. Upfront, the must-have counter and high stools look out streetwise, while at the back, the open kitchen, headed up by Zach Elliott-Crenn, fires up the culinary action, sending out a faultlessly modern take on new-Brit cuisine. Brimming with innovation, a keen eye for seasonality, and executed with pin-sharp precision, things get going with Arctic char served with artfully arranged shavings of heritage carrot, and smoked cream finished with sprigs of dill; otherwise, raw scallops with cod’s roe, kale and green apple might appeal. At main course, the well-judged balance of flavour, texture and colour interest continues with caramelised Sussex venison partnered with squash, purple kale, beetroot and elderberries, or fish fans might go for monkfish counterpointed with artichoke, parsnips and smoked mussel broth. For pudding, sweet pumpkin sorbet is contrasted with ethereal lime sabayon and the deep toffee tones of muscovado crumble.
