On first impression, Portland feels like the sort of relaxed neighbourhood gaff you’d like to have in your area. Just up the road from the BBC, the place got off the blocks with a flying start in 2015, making headlines of its own with its on-trend take on new-Brit cuisine, scoring high with precision cooking, unstuffy, spot-on service and an intimate, pared-back interior of wooden tables and chairs, plain white walls, retro lighting, and an upbeat vibe. Upfront, the in-vogue counter and high stalls look out streetwise, while at the back, the open kitchen fires up the culinary action. Brimming with innovation and a genuine sense of seasonality, the to-the-point menu offers vibrant small snack plates as a tempting prelude and might include a fun combination of chicken skins, liver parfait, candied walnuts and Muscat grapes or succulent smoked eel paired with kohlrabi and the bracing kick of horseradish. Razor-sharp dishes cleverly balance flavour, texture and colour interest, as in a starters such as salsify, pork jowl, confit egg yolk and 18-month-aged Comté cheese. At mains, Denham Estate deer might be counterpointed with alliums and pickled mustard seed, or Cornish cod could appear with oca, a Peruvian root veg, and brown butter sauce.
