Lurking amid office buildings on the business side of Mayfair, Angela Hartnett's upscale Italian is all about creature comforts, with yielding upholstery and thick carpets, mirrored surfaces and dark wood trim in a punctiliously well-patrolled room. Simplicity and freshness may be the Italian watchwords as ever, but often those impressions disguise a great deal of preliminary labour, as here where each dish is fine-tuned to a supremely satisfying pitch. Look at the sheer-textured pasta in a starter of pumpkin tortelli in sage butter, its filling silky, the final touch of genius a scattering of smashed amaretti. Fish could be beautifully tender pollock in parsley velouté with charred calçot onion and spicy 'nduja crumble, or there may be a winter warmer of melting venison loin in its own ragù, with smooth celeriac purée, red cabbage and delicate gnocchi. In spring, Herdwick lamb comes into its own, the braised neck and sweetbreads served with the sharpening element of goat curd and a slew of freshly popped peas. For dessert, there's an irresistible Amalfi lemon tart, served slightly warm and sharp enough to produce a pleasurable sucking-in of cheeks, or the signature pistachio soufflé with luxurious hot chocolate sauce.
