The single-width frontage on a side-street off Piccadilly, with its café chairs outside, looks a deceptively ordinary affair, but abandon any preconceptions, for Angela Hartnett's restaurant is one of the reference venues for sophisticated Italian food in the West End. Inside is a different kettle of fish altogether, with thick carpets, mirrored and marble surfaces and modern art providing a high-gloss backdrop to the culinary enticements. Well-pitched service is faultlessly efficient, with just the correct note of informality, ensuring everybody feels at home. The seasonally changing menus, including a top-value lunch carte, deal in sharply etched cooking of verve and energy, with simple but effective contrasts of flavour and texture throughout. Start with a serving of smoked eel, its meaty richess offset with semi-dried tomatoes, the pungency given lift with horseradish emulsion, or there may be grilled citrus-cured salmon with asparagus and blots of lemony crème fraîche. Main course might be a demonstration in how far to take an accompanying flavour without achieving overload: a welter of orange – compôte, torched segments, a purée of the burnt fruit, orange-braised baby fennel – add up to a harmonious supporting chorus for a sublime piece of succulent pork belly, the whole prettified with a flutter of nasturtium leaves. Fish might be hazelnut-crusted brill with a raviolo of prawns. At the end comes a sparingly topped apple tarte fine with salt caramel and thyme ice cream, or a luxurious pistachio soufflé anointed with hot chocolate sauce, worth the wait.
