One of the UK’s foremost chefs, Angela Hartnett now heads up her own mini-constellation of restaurants. Her elegant Mayfair flagship is a fresh, light-filled room whose Mayfair postcode is reflected in the upscale decor, and the namesake Venetian glass stars in arty chandeliers. The lady charged with day-to-day handling of Hartnett's Italian-influenced culinary style is head chef Pip Lacey, and she takes prime ingredients as the starting point for her contemporary Italian ideas. A fresh and simple composition of cured sea bream partnered with kohlrabi, capers, pear and rosemary purée might get things off the mark, or you might set out with a decadent pairing of quail and foie gras with Jerusalem artichoke, red cabbage and almonds. In such a setting, it would be a mistake to pass on the pasta, with the likes of chestnut anolini boosted with mushroom consommé and sprout tops on offer, or black pepper gnocchi with smoked haddock, quail’s egg and beurre noisette. At main course stage, fish is expertly handled – perhaps halibut with baked celeriac, dates, squid and lemon – or there could be a comfort-oriented pairing of crispy pork belly with heritage carrots, roast onion and pickled turnip. Desserts are equally stimulating, with panettone pain perdu with sticky toffee sauce and banana and rum ice cream sitting alongside pistachio soufflé with hot chocolate sauce. The set lunch menu is a top-value entry point, and an impressive wine list naturally features well-chosen Italian growers, and offers some intriguing organic and biodynamic bottles.
