Medlar is at the World's End end of Kings Road. Behind its small terrace area is an attractively simple interior, with spring-green banquettes and linened tables reflected in distressed mirror panels. Cheery staff create the right kind of ambience, while the kitchen specialises in modern bistro dishes of strong appeal. Most utilise a broad range of components, but in well-defined precision, beginning perhaps with crab raviolo, brown shrimps, leek fondue and samphire in bisque, or duck egg tart with a sautéed heart, lardons and turnip purée. Japanese and Italian notes inveigle themselves in, so fish might be turbot and baby squid in dashi with shimejis and sea kale, while the right royal treatment is reserved for meats such as roast quail glazed in soy sauce, maple syrup and lime, its legs confit, served with crêpe parmentier, foie gras, hazelnuts and a dollop of zhoug (Yemeni green chilli relish). Add a side of triple-cooked chips in a slather of béarnaise, and it's hard to see what else you could wish for, other than a chocolate tart and honeycomb ice cream to see you on your way.
