At the World's End end of Kings Road, Medlar’s pavement terrace is a pull in fine weather; inside the place goes for a discreet simplicity, with mint-green banquettes, cheery splashes of modern art, and crisply clothed tables reflected in distressed mirror panels. Cheery staff create an easygoing ambience, while the kitchen deals in modern European dishes that deploy a broad range of top-class components in well-defined precision. Tagliatelle with braised oxtail, chestnuts, chanterelles and crosnes opens proceedings with an impressive interplay of textures and crystal-clear flavours. There’s a similarly refreshing lack of faff, too, with a full-on main course starring wild Scottish venison, the rump served ruby red and tender alongside braised shoulder, crushed carrot and swede, cime di rapa and pickled walnut. At the end, a classic rendition of tarte Tatin is as good as you’re likely to encounter anywhere, particularly when it’s matched with the cleansing tang of crème fraîche ice cream.
