Modern cooking in traditional Hackney pub

What was once a run-down boozer on the Hackney Road was taken over in 2015 by chefs Tom Harris and Jon Rotheram, both of whom previously worked at influential London restaurant St John. Restored to its former glory as a traditional pub downstairs, the first-floor restaurant is of a contemporary, minimalist style. Popular with the local hipster crowd, the menu changes daily and always includes a seasonal pie. Modern techniques are applied to traditional dishes, which are simple and bold. Start with cured Tamworth pork, celeriac and beer mustard before a main course of smoked haddock, mussels and leeks. Leave room for the signature dessert of brown butter and honey tart.
