Global restaurant group Hakkasan's City of London bridgehead stands in a street that exemplifies how rapidly the financial district is changing. Less than a working lifetime ago, it was a gastronomic desert round here; now this minimalist, clean-lined Chinese restaurant is typical of what defines dining in the capital's East Central district. An office-like entrance takes you into a dining area with a glass-walled kitchen, smart, lowish tables, chairs with plumped-up, slate-blue cushions, and comfortable banquettes. Even the pleasingly hard-yet-spongy flooring is attention seeking. Head chef Tong's creative take on modern Chinese cooking permits occasional European twists on a range of menus that include a multi-course tasting, with a vegetarian option. HKK is not for penny-pinchers, for this is the land of the fat annual bonus. Whether it offers value for money you can judge after a tasting menu dinner of, in part, chrysanthemum supreme seafood soup, wild sea bass with black truffle and balsamic vinegar, and grilled Japanese Wagyu beef with king sanpei sauce. On Saturday afternoons only, two people may opt for the Duck and Champagne menu featuring cherrywood-roasted whole Peking duck. Desserts pursue the fusion theme with ideas such as caramelised pineapple, kataifi and vanilla ice cream.
