Central London does not hold all the aces when it comes to dining in the capital, for Chiswick High Road in little old W4 is home to one of the country's most idiosyncratic and thrilling restaurants. This is the realm of Mikael Jonsson, a Swede whose passion for ingredients is matched only by his insatiably curious mind. The space has plenty of fashionable Scandinavian naturalness and neutrality, with exposed brick walls, striking artworks, blond wood, natty designer chairs, and, yes, an open-to-view kitchen. Choose one of the tasting menus and go with the flow, including the wine flight so that your drinks suit the food. Such is the creativity in the kitchen that dishes change during service, so you might not be eating exactly the same things as the person on the next table. Things start with the exceptional sourdough bread and move onto an array of beautiful looking plates that pack a punch. Cornish rock oysters are matched with a delicate apple foam, a hand-dived scallop is cooked in its own juices and matched with dried seaweed powder. Roasted breast and leg of squab comes with smoked potatoes, blackcurrant purée, rocket and lemongrass purée and a foie gras sauce. Among sweet courses, fresh English blueberries arrive with blueberry syrup, topped with a tiny crisp meringue and lemon and rosemary sorbet.
