Alexis Gauthier's charmingly unmodernised Regency townhouse restaurant, with its iron railings and glossy black front door, certainly stands out from the regular Soho crowd; you even have to ring the bell or knock to enter. Inside, the light-filled first-floor dining room aptly conveys its charm, with original fireplace, striking artworks and tall windows. This is the elegant backdrop for Gauthier’s appealing prix-fixe roster that runs the full gambit of carte, lunch and tasting menus (including vegan options) boosted by classy between-course action, plus impressive breads and a sparkling wine list. Okay, while white linen, hushed tone and professional service may nod toward a traditional style, this doesn’t translate to plates, where light, high-gloss modern French dishes come dressed-to-thrill. Take a classy duck and cep ravioli lunch opener, teamed with sautéed girolles, mushroom salad and a duck jus, while roast fillet of sparkling-fresh sea bream is complemented by sweet-and-sour root vegetables, sautéed sea aster and a top-notch fish velouté. Okay, each dish maybe labelled with a calorie count, but don’t hold back on the heavenly dark chocolate tart (70% grand cru) and yogurt sorbet.
