Part of the extremely fashionable and jaw-droppingly stylish Como The Halkin, deep in smartest Belgravia, the restaurant namechecks the famous Arzak family, whose San Sebastian restaurant is a global foodie destination. The minimalist dining room is a bright white space with pierced wooden screens and a real wow of a ceiling installation –  7,000 golden glass test tubes filled with spices. What you’ll find on offer here is the ‘New Basque cuisine’ – stunningly beautiful dishes that reinterpret the earthy, robust tastes and textures of the region with a great deal of flair and imagination. As well as the thrilling tasting menu, there’s an à la carte at lunch and dinner, and the set lunch gives a good idea of the style at a rather more affordable price. Terse but playful menu descriptions give little indication of the finely judged flavour combinations that can be expected in starters like the ‘foie gras totem’. Main courses might include ‘turbot beyond blackberries’, or ‘venison fractal with cherries’. The selection of Spanish cheese is tempting – but who could resist the ‘passion of chocolate’?
