In double-fronted premises beneath an anonymous office block in the purlieu of Victoria station, Andrew Wong has established one of the capital's more ambitious Chinese restaurants. The decor may be modest enough, with close-packed unclothed tables and bar seating, but when it comes to culinary ambition, the sky – or rather the almost equally vast range of China's regional cuisines – is the limit. A 10-course evening tasting menu indicates the modernity of the approach, its multifarious stages embarking with a cured scallop and stuffed crab claw with wasabi, passing through the undoubtedly challenging braised abalone with sea cucumber and shiitakes, and more familiar peanut-studded gong bao chicken, to arrive at a dessert plate of coconut sorbet with mochi, dried Xinjiang mulberries, blackberries and yogurt. Meanwhile, the regular menu is full of surprises: try goldfish (-shaped) dumplings with seared foie gras and chive flower oil. Lunchtime dim sum, including potsticker dumplings and Laughing Buddha buns, are an important resource for local office workers, while the Forbidden City bar offers stylish drinks and nibbles pairings to transition you into the nicer end of the day.
