The whitewashed facade looks the very image of the coaching inn that The White Swan once was, but indoors the split-level restaurant conforms to contemporary expectations with neutral shades, pale wood and glass panels. The approach is decidedly unaffected, with hospitable service matched by appealing, well-executed food. Braised beef cheek is wrapped Tunisian-style in crispy filo pastry and served with buckwheat noodles and horseradish cream. To follow, you're in safe hands with herb-crusted rack of lamb with Jerusalem artichoke purée, rich lamby jus and fresh spring vegetables, and for afters, it's hard to pass on the classic delights of crème brûlée with home-made shortbread.
