Wines by the glass

This handsome 16th-century inn overlooking the River Hodder is a gem of stone floors and ancient beams, open fires, antique furniture and prints. You can eat in the bar areas or in the more formal restaurant. The kitchen has a confident touch, turning out a diverse menu including spicy fried squid in chilli lime and soy dressing with carrot and ginger salad, seared salmon fillet with smoked haddock, spinach, potato chowder and pea purée, or chargrilled beef sirloin with the usual trimmings. End with one of the traditional puddings or home-made ice cream.
