On a balmy summer’s night, the lush roof garden and roof terrace of Shaun Rankin's high street operation is hard to beat, but there’s some superlative dining to be done before you round off an evening beneath the Jersey skies. There's a lively ground-floor bar, a pavement terrace for people watching, and the ground-floor restaurant is done out with sleek art deco-style glamour reminiscent of a 1920s ocean liner, all wooden floors, chandeliers, plush royal blue velvet buttoned sofas and mustard yellow leather seats at darkwood tables simply decorated with small lamps. After almost two decades on the island, Rankin is a firm believer in Jersey's fine produce, and his menus showcase the best the island has to offer in modern French dishes that astonish with their depth of natural flavour and beautiful presentation. A thrilling starter could bring together red mullet and scallop, pointed up with the vivid notes of fresh blood orange, Fourme d’Ambert cheese and white chocolate. Next up, perhaps Dover sole with ‘fish pie flavours’, roast leeks, sea vegetables and parsley oil, or if you’re not taken by the maritime mood, how about venison with parsnip purée, medjool date, ginger and smoked chocolate tortellini? To finish, try treacle tart with macerated raspberries and clotted cream ice cream.
