If you're looking for a spectacular location and you like wild and lonely, you won't go far wrong here. This white-painted lodge, far out on a peninsula on the west coast of Skye, enjoys breathtaking views across the surrounding sea lochs to the flat-topped mountains known as MacLeod's Tables. Inside it's cosy and welcoming, with dark wood, tartan carpets, local artwork and friendly, helpful service. The formal, candlelit dining room, with its dark pink walls, is traditional, with a few contemporary touches, and the modern Scottish food is precise, with an emphasis, perhaps not surprisingly, given the location, on seafood. Start with a perfectly-timed scallop, caramelised on the outside and sweet within, accompanied by a cylinder of lightly-dressed crab meat in a slice of apple, with celeriac purée adding depth. Roasted sea bass with gnocchi, asparagus and Normandy sauce is a tightly focused dish – beautifully fresh fish with crisp skin and vibrant flavours, the soft, light gnocchi the ideal addition. Passionfruit cheesecake with coconut and mango ends on a more exotic note.
