Set off the main Armadale road, you follow a single-track lane until the Lodge comes into view, a grandly traditional country house with the Sound of Sleat as a glorious backdrop. Originally home to the chief of Clan Donald, this is a wild and remote location for a seriously comfortable hotel with a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere. The dark grey walls and antique paintings in the dining room make an elegant, refined setting for Marcello Tully’s food, which makes the most of a remarkable choice of quality ingredients. A classically French approach broadens out to take in influences from Scotland and beyond. The five-course dinner menu might offer slow-roasted oxtail with langoustine and oriental sauce, followed by the Kinloch ‘seafood collection’ – perhaps including crab meat from Uig, home-cured salmon, and locally-smoked mussels. Ballotine of roast quail is enclosed in cured ham, with vegetable and Perthshire honey mousse. A mango, lime and coconut espuma is a fresh, clean-tasting pre-dessert, before a very fine chocolate parfait with textures of hazelnut and coffee, and an excellent milk sorbet.
