The white-painted house is handsome enough - the ancestral home of the high chief of the Clan Donald no less - while the setting is awesome, overlooking the waters of na Dal sea loch. The current laird, Godfrey Macdonald (the 8th Lord Macdonald), lives at Kinloch with Lady Claire, the well-known cookery writer. They have created a glorious retreat with an unassuming elegance, cosy fires, and a restaurant that really packs a punch. Head chef Marcello Tully and his team deliver an inspiring repertoire of French influenced modern Scottish fair, with superb regional ingredients at the heart of everything. The formal dining room is adorned with imposing historic portraits. After an opening 'soupçon' of roast butternut squash comes west coast scallops, served up with a warm mousse made with the roes, and the flavours of citrus and ginger. Next up, 'Marcello's special', which might be Mallaig hake with some subtle Indian spicing, followed by the necessity to make a decision - meat or fish. The former could be Speyside beef with Strathdon blue cheese mousse and rich brandy sauce. To finish, choose between dark chocolate melt with vanilla espuma and crème de menthe or Scottish and French cheeses from the trolley, or have both.
