With its venerable beams, inglenook fireplace and convivial ambience, the setting is that of a rather romantic, quintessentially English 17th-century inn, albeit with a nod to 21st-century tastes in the restaurant. There are seasonal influences drawn from the wider European cuisine, thus a summer meal opens with smoked duck salad with spiced apple chutney, watercress and radish and grain mustard dressing, or perhaps gazpacho with the added bonus of crayfish, avocado and grilled peppers. Following on, pan-fried sea bream is matched with saffron and fennel compôte and sauce vièrge, and things end on an impeccably summery note courtesy of a vanilla pannacotta with strawberry compôte and basil.
