The 16th-century manor house has been restyled with soft-focus contemporary decor as you’d hope in a posh Laura Ashley bolt-hole. Dovetailing neatly with mullioned windows in the Cavendish dining room, it makes for a soothing backdrop to some well-considered modern country-house cooking. Luxury abounds from the off – perhaps lobster bisque with tarragon crème fraîche, or foie gras ballotine with blood orange and puffed wild rice. Main courses might match Icelandic cod with crab tortellini, spring greens and vermouth, or whole plaice grenobloise with fine herb pommes mousseline. Finish sumptuously with 80% Callebaut chocolate délice with espresso mousse and spiced rum.
