Traditional and modern fare in an ancient riverside inn

AA Inspector

At a glance

Private dining
Wines by the glass
Wheelchair access

The Bugle's carefully restored interiors with their solid brickwork, bare floorboards, low ceilings and beams are exactly what a venerable country inn should look like, while the kitchen offers a clever mix of pub stalwarts and modern dishes. Fish and chips, Sunday roasts and sandwiches keep traditionalists happy, while the gastro brigade delight in the likes of pressed rabbit and prune terrine with pickled turnip to start, followed by bream fillet with potato salad, creamed leeks and kale. Extras include a tempting bubble-and-squeak cake, and finishers are rewarded with honey-spiced pear with pistachio ice cream and honeycomb, or dark chocolate terrine with boozy cherries and clotted cream.
