The first Hotel du Vin branch set the template for all the others - wooden floors, unclothed tables and cream walls hung with wine-related images - and the kitchen follows the familiar formula of traditional British and classic French dishes. A straightforward approach keeps flavours clear-cut: Shetland scallops with sauce vièrge, or steak tartare, followed by garlicky chicken schnitzel with salad, or sole meunière. Various salads and plats du jour extend the range - beer-battered haddock with chips on Fridays, for instance - and the impressively presented puddings include crêpe Suzette soufflé and tarte au citron with raspberry sorbet.
