This well-known and long-running restaurant-with-rooms has a wonderful setting, in a 17th-century building right on the harbour in this lovely little fishing village. It’s a great place to watch the sun go down – have a drink outside in the courtyard before heading in to the bright, airy dining room. The menu is quite traditional, with interesting contemporary interpretations of classic dishes and flavour combinations, and tasting menus are available at both lunch and dinner. A neatly presented starter of roast veal sweetbread comes with salt-baked celeriac, charred salsify, milk crumble and elderflower gel; or you might try the smoked eel with hazelnut and eel mousse with apple terrine, potato and eel croquette, and apple and eel sauce. A main course could be chalk stream trout with Cornish crab, Asian celery, roasted sprouts, seaweed crisp and dashi broth, or loin of South Downs vension with apple and beetroot relish, Magalitza black pudding and wild mushrooms. Muscovado and raspberry cannelloni with crème pâtissière, iced raspberry mousse and sour chocolate sticks is a great dessert – stylish and well conceived.
